The Faculty was established in 1994 by merging several chairs that provide basic physics and mathematics training for the first and second year students in almost all directions and specialties of the University.

The Faculty provides training for more than 650 students who are the future experts in the application of information systems and technologies in different areas of production of science and education (informatics, mathematics, physics, ecology, computer graphics).
Faculty of Natural sciences' graduates
Already more than five hundred professionals, bachelors and masters have graduated from the Faculty. As the analysis of the employment of graduates shows more than half of them are more or less connected with teaching activities or working with staff. 15 % work in the school educational system, 20% at the level of higher education and more than 25% in positions of professional consultants, HR managers or teachers of training information technology related courses. Another third part of graduates have jobs related to the hardware and software support of information systems, besides a large percent of former students of the Departmnent of Natural Sciences was organized into independent companies and development teams.
Sufficiently large number of graduates continues on to post-graduate university program. Their research topics are related to automation and control of educational processes, theory and methodology of creation of educational software, computer testing systems construction, experiments control, technical equipment of training, development and educational use of Internet resources.
The Faculty's graduates successfully work not only in different regions of the Russian Federation but also in many other countries of the world: USA, Germany, Israel and other. The Chair is proud of its students, many of whom became qualified specialists and organizers of science and education.

Youth Policy of the Faculty
One of the main indicators of active life position of students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences is student government. In 1997 there was established the first and only in Russia Student Faculty. In the past five years at the Faculty student curatorial movement is being developed: senior students help younger adapt to the peculiarities of education in the higher education institute. At the Faculty an annual scientific and practical conference of students and postgraduate students "Information Technology in Education" is held. The Faculty's students are regular authors of magazines «Computer Instruments in Education», «Terabyte», «Supreme Class». Students of the Faculty regularly hold mathematical tournaments for those students of University who love mathematics. Extracurricular activities of the students of the Faculty are organized by the Student Chair. Every year students come up with something new, from patriotic contests in the auditorium of the University to rock evenings in the clubs of the city. The Student Chair is actively involved into the cultural life of students. For students there are organized trips to museums, exhibitions, meetings with interesting people. Therefore, it is the Student Chair of the Faculty of Natural Sciences that became the basis for the revival of the Student Club and is the active participant.
Students of the Faculty annually participate in the competitions among the authors of the best graduate works implemented by order of the city administration; multiple times they have been among the best at national competitions in mathematics, engineering graphics, professional pedagogy; they are the winners of grants of Government of St. Petersburg, the winners of the U.M.N.I.K. program.
Activities of the "Children and Youth Computer Club" of Chair of Engineering and Computer Graphics are widely known. This chair, as well as the Chair of Laser Technologies and Applied Ecology, is a part of the Faculty of Precision Mechanics and Technologies, but at the same time is an associate member of the Chair of Natural Sciences because the turn-out of their specialists they complete at the Natural Sciences Faculty.

Scientific, Productive and Innovative Work at the Faculty
At the Faculty there is a great and profitable scientific work going. Staff of the Faculty carries out projects of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia on the creation and development of the system of federal educational development portals, Russian system of Internet competitions, analysis of the state of profile and pre-profile trainings for seniors of the North- West region of Russia.
Chairs of the Faculty of Natural Sciences actively cooperate with the Educational Centre for Internet Education and the Center for Remote Education of the University. In the process of this cooperation training programs for young teachers of the course "Informatics" are implemented, lectures and practical lessons are held, there are guided tours in the University Museum of Optics; the system of distance learning is being educationally filled with disciples of natural sciences, general technical sciences and professional teaching cycles.
Developments of teachers, post-graduates and students of the Faculty (for example, interactive lectures with flash animations, second and third-dimensional network simulators, historical encyclopedias, informative materials) are well represented on the portal of our University and in catalogs of Russian educational resources.
Apart from teachers students are actively taking part in scientific research. At the Faculty annual scientific and practical conferences for students and post-graduates "Information Technologies in Education" are held. Students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences are the regular authors of such magazines as "Computer Instruments in Education", "Terabyte", "Supreme Class".
Chair of Higher Mathematics
It is the largest Chair at Saint-Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics. It exists since the establishment of the University. The Chair provides teaching of mathematics for students of all full-time and part-time faculties. Since 1994, the Chair is an administering Faculty. Since 2000, it has started the preparation for bachelors in applied mathematics and informatics and for masters in mathematical modeling. The Chair is headed by Professor Popov, the Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. The staff of the Chair consists of 40 teachers; 28 of them have academic degrees and titles.
Since the establishment the Chair has employed such outstanding scientists as Isidor Natanson, Vladimir Tartakovsky, Victor Popov, Ivan Molotkov, Y. Alenitsyn, V. Zhuk and others. Research interests of the staff cover almost all sections of Mathematics. At the Chair a powerful scientific school for mathematical modeling of complex physical systems was developed. Professor Vladimir Tertychny is a member of the New York Academy and the Soros' Professor. The Chair is actively involved in research in such fields as mathematical modeling, theoretical and mathematical physics, functional analysis and computer science. The staff members have published more than 300 papers in national and foreign magazines.
The Chair's staff members are actively involved in international scientific conferences; they are working on Russian and international research projects. Lately the direction which is associated with nanophysics and nanotechnology, quantum computers and quantum communications is actively developed. So in the past few years the teachers and post-graduate students of the Chair have done research in the international RFBR project -DFG "The interface structure of the atomic scale in magnetic nanosystems", in INTAS project "Hierarchy of scales in magnetic nanostructures"; in research RFBR projects "Noncollinear magnetism in metallic nanosystems", "Spatially inhomogeneous states in metallic magnetic nanosystems", "Building of the predictive model for the formation of inorganic nanotubes". The teachers are actively involved in the work of Russian and international scientific conferences, they make presentations and teach abroad. There is a close scientific cooperation with St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg Faculty of V.A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University (ETU), physical chemistry of nanosystems laboratory of the Institute of Silicate Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other research centers both in Russia and abroad (for example, the University of Maseille and Toulon (France), Jyväskylä (Finland), the Humboldt University of Berlin ( Germany)). The Chair actively cooperates with Google Corporation and other leading computer companies, which employ many graduates of the Chair. Students of the Chair have been the world champions in programming, the champions of Russia and St. Petersburg in mathematics and they are actively involved in scientific work. Through the last year only, six members of the Chair's staff have defended their dissertations, four of them are the graduates of the Chair.
Chair of Physics
The Chair of Physics as a division of the University has existed since the establishment of the university. The Chair provides teaching of the general physics course for students of all full-time and part-time faculties. With the establishment of the Faculty of Natural Sciences in 1994 the Chair also maintains a course of special educational disciplines with annual graduation of a particular group of students (currently of students who were studying in the "Information Systems and Technologies" direction with the qualification of "Specialist in the field of information systems"). The Chair is headed by Professor Stafeev, Ph.D. The staff of the Chair of Physics consists of 38 teachers; 24 of them have academic degrees and titles; 8 of them have the title of professor. The laboratories of the Chair are equipped with modern facilities for training purposes as well as for scientific research which is actively held by the staff and the students of the Chair. The students and teachers of the Chair participate in scientific, technical and methodological conferences "Physics in the system of modern education", "Optics of the XXI Century", international conference on liquid crystals, chiral and fractal structures, small-angle diffraction, etc. A great success is being achieved by providing open lectures on science and technic history by Chair's professors.
Chair of Intelligent Technologies in the Humanitarian Field
The Chair was founded in 1998. It currently trains engineers specializing in 230202 "Information Technologies in Education" with specialization in "Project management in educational information systems". The main idea of the Chair's educational program is the participation of students in the performance of work related to the possible directions of the future work and the problems that are being solved by the University. The students participate in the development of computer-based training programs, electronic guide books, navigating in the Internet programs, original layouts of the tutorials, University's library computerization project implementation. The students learn how to work in a team, they participate in research projects of the Chair. The program provides extended (relatively to the minimum content of education which is set by standards) training in English language. Graduates are focused on working as professional consultants in the field of development and maintenance of information technologies in higher and post-graduate education, publishing and also in business. On the graduating work defense the students of the Chair often present the list of their academic papers. The Faculty employs 10 teachers; half of them have academic degrees and titles. The Chair is headed by Mikhail Poteyev (he is a professor, an Honorary Figure of Russian Higher Education, the laureate of USSR State Education Award).
The scientific work in the field of education informatization is held at the Chair. The Chair's staff members perform the Ministry of Education grant on the RNP project "Development of techniques of network intellectual games usage for the formation of adequate thoughts on careers in information technology of the young people" of the analytical Facultyal target program "Development of Scientific Potential of Higher Education" (2006-2008); post-graduate students annually win the Government of St. Petersburg grants; numerous times the students became the winners of the city contests.
The graduates of the Chair are working as IT-consultants, system administrators, at publishing companies. 50 graduates of the Chair out of 180 have graduated with honors. The majority of the graduates has publications in scientific journals. Two graduates are the authors of guidelines for professionals: Dmitry Pripisnov has published a tutorial on 3D modeling (2001); A. Vinogradov has published a tutorial on computer processing of sound information (2004).
For excellent performance and achievements in scientific and social life of the University Irina Sorokina won a scholarship grant of the President of the Russian Federation (2006).
More than 20 graduates of the Chair are successfully working at the University. For example, Oleg Lazo is the system administrator at the University's telecommunication center, Alexey Ishchenko, Alexander Mayatin, Vladislav Povyshev, Tatiana Surovegina teach at the Chair of Information Systems and Alexander Mayatin has continued the postgraduate studies and defended the thesis of the candidate of pedagogical sciences. Artem Beresnev, Galina Kotelkova, Anatoly Shishkin, Irina Sorokina, Svetlana Ilicheva work as teachers of the Faculty of vocational education technology. Elena Berdnikova (Sergeyeva) is a leading member of the center for distance learning.
The Chair has active creative connections with the Education Committee of St. Petersburg, the Academy of Postgraduate Education, Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, the Russian Academy of Education, Russian State Vocational Pedagogical University (Yekaterinburg).
Students of the Chair are actively involved in the work of the newspaper "University ITMO" and of the editing and publishing Faculty of the University.
The Chair includes two more Chairs, which do not graduate students but provide natural sciences and general education trainings for the students of the University.
Chair of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
The Chair provides training in general technical disciplines for students of all of the Facultys of the University. The Chair conducts the research work in the field of theoretical mechanics, solid-state mechanics and strength of materials. Chair's staff has developed new analytical and computer methods for fluctuations and transient nonlinear controlled mechanical systems research. The Chair is headed by the assistant professor Vitaliy Melnikov, the candidate of technical sciences.
