Photonics and Optical Information Technology

Chairs within the department:

Head of Chair: Sergey A. Koslov

The chair was created in summer 2002. One of its main goals is the organization of the educational process and preparation of specialists in optical information technologies. This discipline presents a quickly developing, new branch of science and engineering that deals with optical technologies of super-high-speed information transmission, processing and recording, the fast optical computers and artificial intelligence systems. Developments of such optical information - telecommunication technologies of the new generation are a priority for Russian science, engineering and technology.

A program which is unique for the Russian Federation for preparing specialists in optical information technology has been implemented within the framework of the discipline of Laser Techniques and Technologies.

The lecture courses on digital optical computing, optical technologies for artificial intelligence, holographic systems of the information recording and other relevant problems in optical information technology are supported by exclusive scientific, experimental work by the students. This practical work is organized on the basis of experimental internships in the research labs of Vavilov State Optical Institute.

The scientific adviser of the chair for optical information technology is an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Yu.N. Denisyuk.

Among the scientific subdivisions is a laboratory for wave processes, with the goal of supervising under and post graduate students` work in the framework of the Young Scientist Association Optics - XXI century.

R&D centers and labs

Research-Educational Center for Femtosecond Optics and Femtotechnologies

Head of Centre V.N. Vasiliev
Co-Heads S.A. Kozlov and V.G. Bespalov

The Center is founded at Photonics and Optoinformatics Department for carrying out basic and applied research in femtosecond optics and femtotechnologies, and also for carrying out studies in disciplines «Optical technologies of transfer, recording and information processing» and «Basics of femtosecond optics and femtotechnology» and for preparation of the highly qualified experts with good job opportunities at labour market.

The Center is equipped with 5 femtosecond lasers: two Yb:KYW lasers l = 1038 nm with 120 fs pulse duration and 1.5 W average power; femtosecond system with Ti:sapphire l = 800 nm master oscillator (20 fs, 1 nJ, 100 MHz repetition rate) and 8-pass CPA amplifier (35 fs, up to 2 mJ, 50 Hz); Ti:sapphire master oscillator (50 fs, 6 nJ, 100 MHz repetition rate); Er:fiber laser system l = 1560 nm and 780 nm. There are power meters, autocorrelators, spectrometers, etc.

A lot of practical work for students in the framework of course «Basic of femtosecond optics and femtotechnology» - « Major parameters measurements of femtosecond lasers» ; «Spectral continuum generation in microstructure fiber» , «One-cycle THz pulse radiation from InAs crystal in magnetic field irradiated by femtosecond IR pulse» is organized.

2 doctors of sciences, 5 candidates of sciences, 6 post-graduate students and more than 20 bachelors and masters carry out research in the Centre.

Research-Educational Center «Nanostructures and Metamaterials for Information Processing, Transmission and Storage Technologies»

Head of Centre P .A. Belov

The Center develops modern solutions for telecommunication technologies using nano-structured materials with electromagnetic properties which are not available in natural media. The special attention is paid to development of subwavelength imaging techniques, theoretical studies related to homogenization issues and chemical methods of meta- and nano-materials manufacturing. The applications of metamaterials developed by the center range from modern medical imaging techniques to microscopy and nanolithography. The Centre supports the discipline «Modern applications of plazmonic and nanotechnologies».

Laboratory for Optical Technologies for Artificial Intelligence

Head of L aboratory  A.V. Pavlov

The Laboratory is a part of department of Photonics and Optoinformatics and is aimed at providing of both experimental researches and experimental practicum for students. The laboratory is equipped with three stabilized tables for holographic setups, computers and other equipments. Few practical works for students in the framework of courses «Optical technologies for Artificial Intelligence» and «Optical Information Processing» are prepared now: «Van der Lught correlator», «Joint-transform correlator», «Holographic processor for Fuzzy Logic», etc. The equipment allows to carry out experimental research in the area of Fuzzy Logic, Linguistic Modeling, Optical Neural Networks, Optical Information Processing.

Laboratory for Quantum Informatics

Head of Laboratory S.A. Chivilikhin

The Laboratory performs experimental research of quantum cryptography, quantum teleleportation and supports the course «Quantum informatics».

Laboratory work 1. Quantum cryptography. Generation of security key.

The purpose of this work is investigation of the quantum distribution of security key between sender (Alice) and receiver (Bob). The sequence of bits is transferred using a quantum channel. Alice encodes the date, using some quantum states. Bob registers these states.

Laboratory work 2. Quantum cryptography. Noise analysis.

The purpose of this work is investigation of the noise of quantum cryptographic system. For this goal, the percent of errors in the cryptographic key will be measured and analyzed.

Laboratory equipment. Plug-and-Play system of quantum cryptography based on the protocol B92.

Laboratory for Applied Holography

Head of L aboratory O.V. Andreeva

Laboratory «Applied holography» is meant for carrying out experimental practical training on course «Applied holography», educational research graduation works (bachelor and master) and scientific research works on holography. This laboratory has educational stands for carrying out educational laboratory works, holographic stands for hologram recording and research, production area for making polymeric recording media for developing volume holograms, stands for developing image holograms by method of Y.N. Denisyuk and optical holographic elements.

Laboratory for Optoinformatics

Co-Heads O.V. Andreeva and S.V. Artemyev

Laboratory of Optoinformatics is meant for carrying out experimental practical training on course «Basics of optoinformatics». This laboratory has more than 15 stands for different sections of optoinformatics: semi-conductor lasers and detectors in optoinformatics, transfer of information, information handling and storage, optical calculus, optical technologies of artificial intelligence. Practical training consists of 9 laboratory works.
