Biography

Maya Uspenskaya graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry at Leningrad State University (now St. Petersburg State University) in 1994. She received her PhD in molecular physics and thermal physics in 1998 and her DSc – in 2000 from ITMO University. From 1996 to 2011, Prof. Uspenskaya was an engineer, an assistant, and then an associate professor at ITMO University’s Department of Physics and Optical Communications.

As a response to the rapid growth of the fuel and energy complex in Russia, Dr. Uspenskaya initiated and organized the training of relevant specialists at ITMO University. In 2011, she was elected the head of the IT department of the field and energy complex, formed the separation of one of the university’s faculties. She has supervised three PhD students, several UMNIK contestants, and over five winners of the Government of St. Petersburg grant. 

As of now, Dr. Uspenskaya heads the Research Center for Bioengineering and is actively involved in international activities. In 2012, she facilitated collaboration agreements with the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University (Japan), the University of Helsinki (Finland), the Institute of Computational Biology (Montpellier, France), UCLA (the USA), and so on.

She authored more than 130 scientific works, including a monograph. Among her research interests are: radical polymerization, super moisture-absorbents, hydrogels, cross-linked acrylic systems, polymer nanocomposites, analytical research, drug delivery systems, chemical sensors, bioengineering, and medicine.

Prof. Maya Uspenskaya teaches chemistry, physical methods for control and diagnostics, chemical sensors, as well as nanomaterials in biotechnology and bioengineering.
