Biography

Education

1979 – graduated from St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University (LETI University);

1989 – PhD degree in physics and mathematics;

1997 – senior researcher;

2001 – DSc degree in physics and mathematics;

2015 – professor.

Professional activity

After graduating from St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University, ‪Igor Denisyuk has held various posts, from a research trainee to a senior researcher at the Vavilov State Optical Institute, Just Optics, and Corning. In 1994, he was selected as the head of the laboratory and studied chalcogenide semiconductors, organic semiconductors, and polymers to produce a highly-sensitive photothermoplastic film for aerial photography. Since 1989, he has been engaged in the study of nanocrystals and nanocomposites and was the first to publish a paper on the synthesis of nanocomposites with organic and inorganic nanoparticles.

His project was awarded a research grant from CRDF (US Civilian Research and Development Foundation) and subsequently laid the foundation for the creation of holographic materials and establishment of the new scientific school.

Igor Denisyuk joined ITMO University in 2001, first part-time and then, starting 2006, full-time as the head of the then-Faculty of Optics of Quantum Size Systems. He ran studies on nonlinear optical molecular crystals, their application in nonlinear optics and terahertz devices, as well as microlasers based on 3D cuboids and nanocomposites for various purposes.

In recent years, Igor Denisyuk, jointly with Prof. Maya Uspenskaya, began research into biophysics, ecology, photodegradation of polymers, biomedicine, the creation of bacterial and fungicidal materials based on semiconductor and metal nanoparticles. This area holds a great potential for next-gen materials.

Research interests

Nanocrystals, nanocomposites, holographic materials, nonlinear optics, terahertz devices and nonlinear molecular crystals, microlasers, photo-biodegradable and biomedical nanomaterials.
