Physicists Propose Reversible Adjustment of Nanoparticles Color

Physicists Propose Reversible Adjustment of Nanoparticles Color

A team of ITMO University scientists and their international colleagues has developed a method of reversible adjustment of the nanosized light sources radiation color. While earlier studies suggested that the radiation color could only be specified during the nanoparticle synthesis stage, the new research reveals that it also can be changed in fully-formed particles. Stability and electromagnetic resonances of the particles are retained during this adjustment, which opens new possibilities for production of optical chips, LEDs, and optoelectronic devices. The findings are published in Nano Letters.

Houston, We Have a Problem: the Dangerous Subtleties of Space Flights

It may seem that in our technologically advanced age of artificial intelligence and kid hackers, space flights have become a routine and safe activity with perfectly played-out procedures and unfailing equipment. But in reality, even the smallest of glitches can put the astronauts’ lives in peril, which makes space missions even more risky since you can never fully factor in all the possible hazards. In his open lecture at the St. Petersburg Lermontov Library, Alexander Khokhlov, an astronautics popularizer and design engineer at the Russian State Scientific Center for Robotics and Technical Cybernetics, talked about different predicaments that could happen (and really happened) during space flights. ITMO.NEWS publishes the highlights of his speech.

Secret Rules of Russian Public Transport

Secret Rules of Russian Public Transport

Recently, an Indian student who came to study at ITMO commented on how organized the transit system is in St. Petersburg. I wasn’t sure what he meant by that. Maybe he was impressed by how everything comes on time or the fact that you can take public transport to the most obscure parts of the city. Now, I think he was talking about all the unwritten rules that every local knows… how to navigate the mysterious world of public transportation.
