Georg Winckler was appointed as Professor of Economics in 1978 at the University of Vienna. He served as Visiting Professor at the University of Graz (1977-78), of Fribourg (1977-78), of Linz (1985-86, 1992-93), at Georgetown University (1995) and at the Comenius University Bratislava (1998). In 1990/91, he worked as Visiting Scholar at the Research Department of the IMF in Washington DC. In the nineties, Prof. Winckler was much involved in the academic debate on forming the European monetary union. In 1997, he became a member of the Senate of the University of Vienna and acted there as Rector from 1999 to 2011. From 2001 to 2005 he served as Vice-President and from 2005 to 2009 as President of the European University Association (EUA), Brussels. At that time, he was engaged in shaping the Bologna Process and the European Research Area. From 2004 to 2012 he was a member of the European Research Advisory Board. He is also Member of the Supervisory Board of Erste Bank der Oesterreichischen Sparkassen AG. He serves as member of the Board of Trustees of the Educational Testing Service at Princeton, US, and on the boards of two German universities (Humboldt University Berlin, TU Darmstadt)". Since December 2013 he is Member of the University Board of the University of Vienna.
