“I visited St. Petersburg several times. Since 2009 it has become more comfortable for living. The streets, transport, infrastructure and even people are better now. I feel an optimistic atmosphere while standing here.” “I focus on semiconducting nano-materials. It is very popular field in the world science but few of Russian researchers are interested in it. So I`d like to contribute to development of this field.”

“Nowadays the Government of the Russian Federation invests in research centers to develop Russian science. ITMO University is one of them. Using this support ITMO university scientists make great progress in their research activities. I like teamwork with ambitious and motivated young researchers.” “Currently I deal with nano lasers and nano receivers. My colleagues from ITMO University and I provide activities connected with nanoplasmonics. Developing of such systems as nanoplasmonic integrated circuits is very relevant because they are used in computers, smartphones and other devices.”

“My fundamental research project is connected with quantum memory in atomic systems. I started to research this field when I was a student. ITMO University experts deal with quantum cryptography, which helps to encode and protect data. My research correlates with it: I focus on saving and transferring of information.” “I like working at ITMO University. First of all my colleagues and I are the same age, that is why it`s easy for me to get in contact with them. The researchers always try to help me even if my problem is not connected with their fields: they draw analogies with their research areas that help me to comprehend and solve my problem. Furthermore, Russian is my native language so I feel more comfortable communicating with compatriots.”

“I worked in France, the UK, and Brazil as a professor. Seven years ago I emigrated to Iceland. However I wanted to come back to St. Petersburg that is why I started to work here. Moreover, it is a reputable university, where I can focus on my field. I research condensed-matter physics, solid-state optics and many other fields. Apart from participating in ITMO Fellowship program I head Laboratory of Light-Matter Coupling in Nanostructures.”

Mr. Makarov has been serving at the International Research Center For Nanophotonics and Metamaterials for a year. Its` team headed by Pavel Belov, makes progress in research activity by publishing pioneering articles in leading international scientific journals. “Sometimes we had hardly started dealing with an issue when our colleagues published an article centered around the same problem. In this case we don`t waste time for “Following-up.” It is our main principle to publish pioneering articles and provide relevant research. Our team is also open for talented and motivated newcomers.” “ITMO Fellowship program allows recruiting international researchers. The University also offers students various internship programs in large research centers both in Russia and abroad.”
