The Faculty of Engineering Physics (FEP) was established in 1946 for specialist preparation in the field of physical optics, electronics, X-ray radiography and nuclear physics. The Faculty was established due to the initiative of the President of the USSR Academy of Sciences Sergey Vavilov and well-known physicists – Sergey Frisch, Mikchail Eliashevich, Boris Stepanov, etc. In 1952 the FEP was closed due to the reorganization of the structure of the LITMO; Chairs were transferred to the Optical and Radio Engineering Facultys that existed those days. In 1963, the Faculty of Radio Engineering opened a Chair of Quantum Electronics which was headed by Honored Scientist of the RSFSR, Professor Krylov. It was the first Faculty in Russia, which started the preparation of engineers in laser technology and which has played a significant part in the revival of the FEP.
Today the FEP prepares qualified specialists, bachelors, masters in the educational programs with advanced study of physics and mathematics. It is important to ensure that graduates of the FEP have the opportunity to easily adapt to the rapid changes occurring in science and technology. It allows them to take strong positions on the labor market.
All of the educational and research laboratories of the FEP’s Facultys are equipped with modern equipment and computing equipment. Some of the laboratory facilities are unique in their research fields: special purpose lasers; laser complexes for application in medicine, space, ecology, location; ellipsometric and interference devices for measuring of the optical and electrical and physical properties of materials; laser technological facilities; cryogenic equipment, etc. There is also an interFacultyal computer class. Almost all of the Facultys have their own computer classes, in which students simulate many physical processes, solve programming problems, master new educational Internet-based technologies. Much attention is paid to the new technologies of education – distance learning.
In 2008, during the implementation of an innovative project at the Chair of Laser Technologies and Biomedical Optics there was developed and implemented in the educational process a new Masters’ program "Laser biomedical technologies", and at the Chair of Laser Technology and Ecological Equipment Design there was implemented a Masters’ program "Laser micro and nano technologies". The main purpose of these educational programs is to prepare specialists that meet the modern requirements and that can not only solve the current problems, but also guarantee the advanced development of the laser technologies in the field of medical equipment design. Theoretical and practical training of the future master in usage of the facilities of mathematical and physical modeling of products and processing in the field of professional activities makes it possible to significantly increase the effectiveness of the development, design and technological preparation of production of the new laser medical devices, their implementation in the modern medical practice; it provides the increase of the competitiveness of products; it forms the understanding of the capabilities of laser biomedical technologies; it provides the knowledge of modern facilities and methods of information support of the product life cycle processes; it provides a competent concept in the reengineering of business processes, design and manufacture of equipment for the enterprise and its use in medical centers works.
Specified above scientific, technical and educational direction corresponds to the priority directions of development in science, technology and engineering in the Russian Federation "Living Systems" and critical technologies of the Russian Federation "Bioinformation Technologies", "Biomedical and veterinary technology for life support and protection of human and animals". It is due to the fact that laser biomedical technologies is one of the fastest growing areas of modern optical engineering.
The progress in the field of power semiconducting and solid-state lasers with high brightness, compactness, stability and good working possibilities creation stimulates their application in the development of specialized equipment and systems that are widely used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in medical practice for creating of noninvasive methods for multifunctional clinical monitoring and various diseases treatment.
The laser optical methods are promising for the diagnosis, localization and treatment of malignant tumors, photodynamic therapy of various diseases, mammography and imaging of the skin and internal organs, the treatment of glaucoma and retinal detachment in neurosurgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, gynecology, gastroenterology. The tendency of usage of optical methods for monitoring of brain’s functional activity, heart activity, circulatory system works, determination of the speed of blood and lymph flow, blood volume in the biotissues and its degree of oxygenation that has appeared in the last few years defines the aim and goals of this educational program and the main requirements for the graduates of the Masters’ program “Laser biomedical technologies”.
The preparation of specialists of a new generation requires the substantial revision of the traditional educational process and the transition to a new paradigm of its organization on the basis of the competence concept. The main categories of this concept are competences that are representing an integration of knowledge, skills and personal qualities and that characterize the readiness of the graduate to successfully solve professional problems in changing situations. The requirements for the level of training of the graduate are considered as the results of education and are given as a set of defined composition and a level of competencies (qualifications) which must be learned and demonstrated by the graduate.
The field of professional activities of the Master in laser biomedical technologies includes: research, developments and technologies aimed at development of the theory of interaction of laser radiation with biotissues, creation and application of the laser devices and systems for the obtaining, recording and processing of the information about the environment, biological and technical objects.
There was formed an appropriate organizational, informational, laboratory and infrastructural support of the educational process to solve the problems that provide integration of the educational, research and innovative activities.
In particular, the following branches were put into the operation: the Research and Educational Center of laser micro- and nanotechnologies, laboratory of micro- and nanotechnology in laser medicine, laser laboratory of information and technological systems, interFacultyal educational laboratory of computer modeling of physical and technical processes, laboratory of electronic systems and sensors, laboratory of coherent and nonlinear optics, equipped with modern equipment such as submicron positioner, microscope-spectrophotometer, femtosecond lasers, excimer laser, impacted picosecond laser, scanning probe microscope, universal research microscope Axio Imager A1.m (Carl Zeiss, Germany), a fiber laser source, etc. that was acquired during the implementation of an innovative project.
For the first time in the country there was created the Educational and production center for laser technologies by ITMO University in collaboration with enterprises of Laser Regional Northwest Center within the innovative educational program for Masters of "Laser Biomedical Technologies" and other specialties.
The Center is equipped with an automated laser technological equipment of international quality for material processing and is a material and technical basis for the training of specialists in the field of innovative laser technologies and their promotion on the industrial enterprises in various sectors of St. Petersburg and North-West region of Russia. Also for the educational process the modern industrial complex of equipment of the “Lazerteh” enterprise will be involved.
Much attention in equipping of the Educational and Production Center is given to the laser technological systems on the basis of fiber lasers, which according to experts in the near future will challenge the currently dominating on the market laser equipment.
Currently in the Educational and production Center for Laser Technologies there are laser marking system based on 20 W fiber laser, a unique six -axis robotic complex on the basis of fiber lasers of 0.4 kW, 2 kW 5 kW that is capable of producing 3-dimensional cutting, welding and tempering of a variety of complex profile components installed. In the educational classroom of the Educational and Production Center modern educational teaching guides for specialists, bachelors and masters training in profile specialties allowing not only students of the NRU ITMO but also of other universities and the students of Petrovsky college to obtain the necessary practical skills and knowledge of the engineering process works are represented.
Student teams of the FEP are actively involved in competitions in physics, mathematics and informatics of different levels - international, federal, regional and municipal, they win prizes.
At the FEP there is a system of finishing of education at the leading universities in Europe, USA and Asia developed. Annually up to 10 students and postgraduates win training grants for universities in England, Sweden, USA, Germany and other developed countries, there is student exchange held for graduate students, postgraduate students, teachers and researchers from universities and research organizations in Germany, Finland, France, England, China, USA, as well as the processing of joint student projects.
The students of the FEP participate in the scientific work of the Faculty, they are actively involved in contractual and state budgetary research. Among the postgraduates of the Faculty there are winners of the UMNIK program and participants of the works on the basis of RFBR grants, there are students who receive a scholarship of the Government of St. Petersburg.

Many graduates of the FEP have achieved much success in science, production, business. For example, a current member of RAS Yuri Nikolaevich Denisyuk who graduated in 1954 offered and provided explanation of the method for holographic recording in three-dimensional environments, he developed the principles of dynamic holography and methods of its practical applications, he was the winner of the Lenin Prize and twice the winner of State Prizes. The Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Gennady Dulnev who graduated in 1951 was the rector of our university from 1974 to 1986. The Rector of the University Vladimir Vasilev was a lecturer at the FEP. Among the graduates we must note the following ones: the Honored Designer of the Russian Federation and the chief of IDB "KBP" (Tula) Semen Pogorelsky and the Vice Rector and Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor Yury Kolesnikov who graduated in 1980; the Head of the territorial Federal Agency for Management of Special Economic Zones in St. Petersburg Yury Mikhaylov who graduated in 1983; the General Director of JSC "Energoform" Vladislav Volodkevich who graduated in 1986; the President of JSC "Sevzapmoloko" Igor Podlipentsev who graduated in 1991 and many others. Among the graduates of the last decade we must note the following ones: the Head of the Laboratory of the Technical Research and Development Institute Alexander Kyamyarya who graduated in 2004; the General Director of JSC "Thermo" Alexander Plotnikov who graduated in 2000; the candidate of technical Sciences and the leading expert of JSC "Kryotherm" Filipp Takhistov who graduated in 1999 and others.
The Faculty has actively participated in an innovative educational program, during which there were created the latest teaching and research laboratories and masters’ programs "Laser micro-and nanotechnologies" and "Laser biomedical technologies" and also there was established an international scientific and educational center "Laser micro-and nanotechnologies" which is focused on the training for national and foreign students; advanced training for specialists in laser micro-and nanotechnologies including research and educational laboratory of laser micro-and nanotechnologies, nanomaterials in laser biomedicine and laser information technology systems .
With the participation of students there are scientific research works in the fields of medicine, electronics, laser technology, optics, shipbuilding, aviation, telecommunications, food processing, energy and ecology held at the Faculty.
