 1. What are the Control and Informatics?

Control is the science that studies the principles of constructing of Control systems that are operating both with and without the direct human intervention.

Informatics is the science of methods of receiving, storing, processing and transmitting of information in order to manage some process from a distance.

Control + Informaticsis a cycle of disciplines that are studying the general laws of Control and transmission of information in technical systems, living organisms and society.

The Control and Informatics is

  • systems of automatic Control and monitoring that are used in all areas of science, technology, medicine and biology

  • computer expert and intelligent prediction and decision-making systems for managing of economic and ecological systems

  • personal computers and the latest software means for digital signal processing, computer-aided Control system design and modeling

  • the latest technical means for digital communications and telecommunications.

2 . What and how students are taught at the Department?

The Department of Control Systems and Informatics (MS&I) prepares

  • Engineers in the specialty 220201.65 - "Control and informatics in technical systems"

  • Bachelors of engineering and technology in the direction 220200.62 - "Automation and Control"

  • Masters of engineering and technology in specialization 220200.68.01 - "Control and informatics in technical systems".

The duration of training of engineers in full-time program is 5 years, Bachelors - 4 years, Masters - 2 years in case of successful completion of the bachelor cycle. Students are given a respite from the army and the possibility of special training at the military Department, after successful completion of which they are assigned a rank of reserve officer.

The training program includes

  • advanced studies of higher mathematics, physics and theoretical mechanics

  • studying of general technical disciplines such as computer science and programming, circuit design, electronics

  • studying of the economic disciplines and foreign languages

  • studying of special subjects such as Control theory, information theory and coding theory, microprocessor systems, computer-aided design.

The practical skills of working with modern Control systems and their elements the students gain in the laboratories of the Department

  • Laboratory of Mechatronics and Robotics

  • Laboratory of Automation Electronic Devices

  • Laboratory of Information Transmission.

The Department successfully prepares postgraduate students in the specialty 05.13.01 - "System analysis, information Control and processing".

The two training computer classes of the Department are equipped with the local network on the basis of 28 personal computers.

The Department has 27 teachers, including 5 doctors and 20 candidates of sciences. Over 60 years of existence the Department has prepared over 4500 engineering graduates.

According to the results of work in 2005 and 2006 at the University the Department has occupied the I place, in 2009 - the III place.

3 . What do the graduates of the MS&I know and what are they capable of?

The graduates of the MS&I Department know

  • scientific methods for research and construction of automatic Control systems, as well as of modern systems of information transmission and transformation

  • statistical methods for research of processes in technical and socio - economic systems

  • theoretical foundations of the modern microelectronics and electrical engineering

  • theoretical foundations and the principles of digital technology construction, modern software of personal computers

  • foundations of economic activities: Control , marketing and logistics.

The graduates of the MS&I Department are able to

  • develop and maintain the automatic Control system used in the various sectors of the modern economy

  • design and maintain modern telecommunication systems, discrete (digital) devices for automation, signaling and transmission of information

  • work with CNC systems of modern technological equipment

  • design, program and build microprocessor Control and regulation devices on the basis of modern microprocessors

  • create mathematical models and scientific predictions of the results of performance on the basis of the statistical analysis of experimental data

  • use the modern software facilities: work with MatLab application packages for scientific computing and modeling, develop databases, use computer-aided design systems for electronic devices.

4. Job prospects and our partners

The graduates of the Department are focused on the following professional activities

  • production and control

  • design and engineering

  • research

  • operational.

The extensive profile of preparation, knowledge of the universal methods for research and design of Control systems, practical skills of working with modern software allow graduates of the Department to find a job at manufacturing plants, technical services and computer centers of various organizations and institutions as well as in commercial structures. The graduates of the Department of the recent years work at the Leningrad NPP, KirovEnergoMash (Department of Automation and Instrumentation), Pulkovo airport service (electricity and light maintenance service), the CISCO company, Open Joint Stock Company Concern CSRI Elektropribor, SPA "Electroautomation", Krylov SRI, St. Petersburg Center for training of managers of the knowledge-based industry, Town Council of St. Petersburg (Computer Information Department), the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations of the Russian Federation, the tax office, etc. The partners of the Department in the industry are more than 20 Russian and international companiesincluding: General Motors, Maxon Motor, CISCO company, Open Joint Stock Company Concern CSRI Elektropribor, SPA "Electroautomation", Krylov SRI, etc. Within the academic and student projects and exchanges the Department actively cooperates with foreign universitiesincluding: the University of California, San Diego (USA), Beijing Polytechnic University (China), the Technical University of Eindhoven (Netherlands), etc.
