Master's Degree Programs

The Department of Engineering Design trains students in all of the program tracks of the School of Biotechnology and Cryogenics - Engineering and Computer Graphics, Solid State Modeling, Theoretical Mechanics, Mechanism and Machine Theory, Applied Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Machine Components and Fundamentals of Design.

The educational process is comprised of several logically interrelated stages. During the first stage, students learn to work with the Unified System for Design Documentation and study the fundamentals of computer graphics by using the AutoCAD kit. Next, they study disciplines necessary to modern specialists: theoretical and applied mechanics, strength of materials, etc.

Innovative educational technologies are widely used in the educational process: problem-based learning, experiential learning, research methods, distant learning, use of computer technologies, etc. For management of student's training, an electronic database has been created, and all students regularly take computer tests.

For all programs, there are sufficient educational learning materials. Every year, the department's lecturers publish 10-15 study guides for the students. Their recent works include: "AutoCAD. Two-dimensional Design", "Theoretical Mechanics. Dynamics", "Reducer Construction Atlas", "Plate-type Heat Exchangers in Low-Temperature Equipment and Biotechnological Processes", and many others.

The department's laboratories are equipped with all the equipment necessary for the educational process, including equipment used for studying the mechanical properties of different materials, defining the moment of inertia of segments. One of the laboratories equipped with PCs is designed for educational and monitored programs like "Choice of induction motor for a mechanism's drive", "Study of a machine assembly's dynamics" or "Defining the vibration isolator properties" have been developed. Similar programs are being developed for studying other disciplines, as well as Flash-based virtual laboratories for distance learning students, learning aids and electronic textbooks. For their end-of-year papers, students use the Winmachine CAD system.

The departments main research activities are

  • helical compressors;

  • heat-and-mass exchange systems of HVAC equipment, ventilation and air conditioning systems;

  • stress and strain in cylindrical anisotropic bodies in a temperature problem;

  • air film bearings;

  • systems for odor control treatment of gas-air emissions;

  • expansion machines for HVAC equipment and pneumatics;

  • solution of nonstationary, non-linear problems of thermal conductivity with complex nonisothermal phase transformations. development of algorithms and software;

  • modeling of soil freezing and thawing processes, solution of geocryology problems;

  • analysis of strength, stress-strain behavior and rigidity of constructions under permanent and impact load with regard to physical and geometrical nonlinearity;

  • mathematical modeling of starting duty of air curtain heaters;

  • optimal operation of a lift truck with regard to operational speed; 

  • modeling aerodynamic processes in compressor and expansion machines;

  • aerohydrodynamics of pipeline systems;

  • vibration-based diagnostics; 

  • distance education methods;
