The Department of Modern Functional Materials offers a Master’s degree in Technical Physics. The staff participates in both fundamental and applied scientific research in the following fields:
1. The development, creation and studying of the functional materials with enhanced electrical and thermal conductivity, durability and other special qualities. These materials are then implemented in the most advanced micro-, nano- and optoelectronic equipment. (International Laboratory “Advanced Nanomaterials and Optoelectronics”).
2. The development of the new methods for studying the structure and the qualities of nano-objects. These new methods possess high spatial, energy and timing resolutions. (TRANSNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATION UNIFEL CENTER FOR ADVANCED METHODS OF MATERIALS RESEARCH)
3. The study of the nanoparticles for bioaccessebility of the microelements and toxicity. (INTERNATIONAL LABORATORY OF TRACE ELEMENTS METABOLISM)
Partnership with Other Universities
The Department of Modern Functional Materials collaborates with the leading universities worldwide and with the largest research facilities in Russia: University of California, Santa Barbara (USA), Aalto University (Finland), University of Tartu (Estonia), Tallinn University of Technology (Estonia), Freiberg University of Mining and Technology (Germany), University of the Balearic Islands (Spain), Ioffe Physical-Technical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia), Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University (Russia), Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (Russia), St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications (Russia), Saint Petersburg State University (Russia).
The Department also has partners among the ITMO University’s subdivisions: Department of Light Technologies and Optoelectronics, Department of Applied and Computer Optics, Department of Laser Technologies and Instrumentation, Department of “Creative Light Design School,” etc.
International Educational Programs
All students and postgraduates of the Department of Modern Functional Materials can take part in research activity within two international laboratories created as a part of “Competitiveness Enhancement Program of ITMO University”: the international laboratory “Nanomaterials and Nanomechanics” and the international laboratory “Advanced Nanomaterials and Optoelectronics”.
Participation in the national and international academic community allows the Department to offer students a chance to participate in the scientific research, training and education in the doctorate of the largest scientific centers worldwide, studying the physics and the chemistry of materials.
