In 1976, the Department of Applied Mathematics the task of which is to train specialists in the field of programming and computing methods separates out of the Department of Computer Science. The Department is headed by the doctor of technical sciences, Professor Oleg Nemolochnov who is specialized on the creation of automated computer design systems.
The Department employs the Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Tseitlin who is specialized in digital filtering, and Professor I. Kryzhanovsky who is specialized in computer experiment.
The staff of the Department is very active in the educational process organizing- they develop new educational programs and laboratory work cycles focused on inoculation of practical skills of using of computer to students of all specialties. At the same time the Department organizes trainings for teachers and staff of the institute in the field of programming and application of the CM facilities in the educational process . The institute has created a student computer class, the methodical liability attaches to the IAM Department. A great contribution to this work was made by associate professors G. Golovanevsky, V. Karmazinenko, M. Troitskaya, P. Shipilov.
After the death of professor Tseitlin, the transition of professor I.I.Kryzhanovskogo to head the Department at the CAF academy and of the associate professor G. Petuhov to head the MAE Department, the creation of a system for automated control of the digital equipment became the main scientific direction of the Department. There are methods for automatic construction of control tests (by Associate Professor A. Usvyatsky, Associate Professor V. Zvyagin) being developed , the systems for craft control of computer circuits (by Associate Professor V. Blokhin , Associate Professor G. Golovanevsky) are being created, the methods for defect modeling in digital circuits and methods for quality assessment of designed tests (by Associate Professor B. Kukushkin, Associate Professor V. Golynichev) are being explored, the works on modeling of large circuits (by Associate Professor A. Zykov) are held. At this time the Department actively collaborates with many organizations such as NICEVT in Moscow, Electroautomation in Leningrad, CBE in Kharkov, CAM plant in Minsk. Due to the work that the Department provides in collaboration with the MAE Department (prof. G. Petukhov) and CET (Prof. S.Rodionov) it is possible to succeed in organizing of the Computing Center that is equipped with modern facilities and is serving all divisions of the institute .
The Department is actively involved in qualification improvement for teachers, some courses that were created by the Department staff are replicated throughout the country. The staff of the Department develops new educational programs and laboratory work cycles that are focused on inoculation of practical computer skills to students of all specialties. At the same time the Department organizes trainings for teachers and staff of the institute in the field of programming and application of the CM facilities in the educational process.
Throughout the last decade at the Department the works in studying of methods for construction of control and diagnostic tests (Associate Professor T. Pavlovskaya, Associacte Professor E. Denisova ) in automatization of the designing and constructing works in optics (Proffessor A. Demin), in information Support of CAD (Associate Professor V. Blokhin ), in microprocessors continue to be held.
At the Department the works on the introduction of distance learning methods are held, the textbooks (Associate Professor A. Lazdin, Associate Professor T. Pavlovskaya) and test kits for individual disciplines and sections of disciplines are created.
The Department of Applied Mathematics was renamed in the Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics in 1994.
