The Chair prepares young specialists - Engineers, Bachelors and Masters specialized in the following fields: Optical Material Science, Optical Technologies, Spectral and Optical-Physical Instruments, Physical Optics and Spectroscopy, Fibre and Integrated Optics, Optical Technology, Optical Electronic Devices and Systems. The Chair conducts post-graduate student training on the basis of ITMO University and Vavilov State Optical Institute.

The Chair was established on the basis of Vavilov State Optical Institute being a leading optical research institute in the Russia having gained a wealth of knowledge in Optics and Optical Material Science.

The chair focuses on combining the fundamental university education with the specialized directions of State Optical Institute. The on-board instrument-making, laser techniques, spectroscopy techniques and thermal imaging, materials and technologies for optoelectronics, fibre and integral optics, laser and non-linear materials, radiation-resistant and photosensing materials, nanodimensional materials and nanotechnologies etc are among them.

The affiliate department focuses on the organization of purpose-oriented student training at Vavilov State Optical Institute aimed at the professional level enhancement of the graduates from university taking into account the actual tendencies in the Optical Material Science, Optics and Instrument-Making.

The Chair now covers three following directions:

• Optical Material Science;
• Information Optical Technology;
• Physical Optics and Spectroscopy.

On these directions the lecture courses are delivered by the leading specialists of Vavilov State Optical Institute.

The highly qualified teaching staff includes: Academician Prof. Yury T. Petrovsky, nine Professors (Doctors of Science in Physics and Maths, Technology and Chemistry) and six Associate. Professors (Candidates of Science). The involvement of leading specialists from Vavilov State Optical Institute enable an optimally coordinated program of the educational process. The Chair structure includes a student research laboratory where the students can work in spectroscopy, refractometry, laser optics and solid state physics.

The main principle of the educational process formation at the Chair focuses on the basic directions developed by Vavilov State Optical Institute including the following disciplines:

• On-board Instrument-Making;
• Laser Physics;
• Fibre and Integrated Optics;
• Holography and Spectroscopy;
• Optical-electronic Devices, Tracing and Control Systems.
