Traditionally the Chair pays special attention to designing special optical and optical-electronic instruments and devices operating in the stressed and extreme conditions and to the methods of the instruments adjustment and test.
The Chair provides training and preparation at Master`s and Bachelor`s levels in Techniques and Technologies in general direction of Optical Techniques, with a qualification in Optical and Optical-Electronic Instruments.
The Chair also provides training for engineers in the profession Optical-Electronic Instruments and Systems majoring in Optical Instruments, Automation of Optical Instruments, Optical-Electronic Information-Measurement and Tracking Devices and Systems.
Graduate engineers are capable of professional work in research, development and design of optical and optical-electronic instruments and systems for different applications.
The scientific base of the Chair includes eight laboratories for research and student training (including a computer classroom):
- Optical-electronic instruments design;
- Computing and modelling optical-electronic instruments;
- Optical and optical-electronic instruments;
- Technical vision instruments;
- Specialized optical instruments for controlling the processes;
- Adjustment of the optical-electronic instruments;
- Metrology and certification of the optical-electronic instruments;
- Scientific research laboratory.
Some of the lectures and students` work are done at the Vavilov State Optical Institute (GOI) and at the St. Petersburg Optics and Mechanics Production Corp. (LOMO).
The faculty of the Chair are recognized worldwide as leading scientists and engineers in instrument-making. The Chair provides training for skilled specialists at postgraduate and doctorate level including the foreign states citizens.
We have close academic and scientific links with educational institutions in Germany. Every year a number of our students are given training at the leading German Technical University Ilmenau. As a rule the State Attestation Boards appreciate a high level of the degree projects presented by the students of the Chair.
The academic courses are in strict compliance with the State Educational Standards. All the taught disciplines are supported with teaching aids and training manuals including those available on the Internet. At the Chair there is an electronic library on the specialization.
The Chair takes part in the scientific and technological program of the Russian Academy of Sciences Conversion and High Technologies 2000. Some of the research works are financed by the Russian State budget and international grants, supported by self-financing scientific initiatives.
During the last few years members and faculty of the Chair have obtained eight patents and invention certificates, published about fifty papers and articles and about thirty-five presentations at various conferences and seminars.
