The basic areas of the research activity at the Chair are:
- Solution of the general problems in mechatronics (the movement laws of the parts of the mechatronic devices, the problems of kinematics and dynamics of the manipulator systems, micro displacements);
- Problems of the Theory of Mechanisms (theory of the super kinematic pair, accuracy of mechanisms, tribonics);
- Problems of the Mechanics of Solids (mechanics of continuous media, catastrophe theory, stability of movement).
Over the last few years a number of mechatronics devices have been designed, manufactured, tested and put into operation. Among them are such mechatronic devices as an instrument for geotechnical examination of subterranean cavities at a borehole extraction site of salt; a device for repairing wells at oil production; a device of the television-visual positioning of the heat generating components at the Chernobyl atomic power station.
Numerous conferences and seminars on mechatronics and micro system technology; theory and geometry of gearings; accuracy of mechanisms; theory of machines and mechanisms; instrument components and applied mechanics were held on the basis of the Chair.
Annually the Chair organizes the All-Russia Student Olympiad on applied mechanics.
A number of the joint contracts with different Russian and foreign universities and academies have been concluded during the last few years. Institute of the Theoretical Engineering Problems (Russian Academy of Sciences); Technical University Ilmenau (Germany); Engineering - Agrarian Academy (Bydgoszcz, Poland); Institute of the Metal-Polymeric Systems Mechanics (Belorussian Academy of Sciences) etc are among them.
Scientific and technical cooperation is conducted with LOMO Optics and Mechanics Corp. Ltd.; Close Corp. Precision Machines; Close Corp. "IZMERON"; "ROSSPETSPRIBOR" Corp. Ltd.; Close Corp. "SKALA"; Close Corp. "Handling Machinery" and others.
In addition, the teaching process involves the works on the laboratory and industry base of the Institute of the Theoretical Engineering Problems (Russian Academy of Sciences); Close Corp. "Handling Machinery"; Close Corp. Precision Machines; Close Corp. "IZMERON" and others.
The computer techniques are widely used in the teaching process. Access to the Internet resources is open for the students too.
