The Chair was established in 1996 as a result of the amalgamation of the two oldest Chairs: Optical Instruments Theory and Optical Instruments & Computerized Optics. The new Chair became the largest educational department in Russia, being a leader in the area of Applied Optics, Optical Instruments and Computer Optics.
The Chair has eight training and research laboratories for:
- Optical Measurements;
- Optical Instruments for the Controlling and Measurements;
- Microscopes and Medical Optical Instruments;
- Survey Meters;
- Cinematographic and Photographic Equipment;
- Computer Appliance of the Optical Control;
- Evaluation of the Optical Imaging Quality;
- Computer Optics.
There are two computer classrooms for students with Internet access.
The scientific potential and laboratories of the largest Russian research and production institutions - Vavilov State Optical Research Institute, The Joint-stock Company LOMO, Efremov Research Institute of the Electrophysics Equipment - are used as a part of the academic process.
The Chair conducts scientific research and development in the following areas:
- Mathematical methods and computer technologies in design, research and manufacture of optical systems;
- Theory of optical systems and optical imaging;
- Design and assemblage of the complex optical systems;
- High aperture and resolution optical systems.
